Local architect Isay Weinfeld kept the principle “form follows function” in mind when he designed this fabulous bookshop—dark floor-to-ceiling shelves and indirect lighting subtly underscore the books, whose vast numbers might otherwise be overwhelming. The Livraria da Vila stocks thousands of culture, fiction and theory titles: most are in Portuguese, with the notable exception of the extensive, English-led art and design sections.

Weinfeld also scattered a number of comfortable reading “nooks” throughout the building. The basement level is largely devoted to children’s literature; it features a small auditorium for courses, lectures and readings. All in all, the Livraria da Vila is a beautifully apt monument to literature.Quote_transparent
